Completed in 1774, the garden was 232 years old in 2006,
the year when the restoration project was officially launched.
In August 2001, the World Monument Fund (WMF) and the Palace Museum began
the pilot work of restoration and protection of Juanqinzhai. After the restoration was
completed, it was unanimously recognized by experts and industry insiders. From
this starting point, the two sides launched a long restoration journey in collaboration.
The work plan includes not only the restoration of the building body, interior
decoration, outdoor garden, rockeries, but also the establishment and improvement
of infrastructure such as ventilation, lighting and temperature control systems.
As a masterpiece of imperial gardens in the Qing Dynasty, Qianlong
Garden has long attracted the attention of historians and architects.
The extremely difficult restoration work has presented many challenges
and provided many surprises for heritage conservation experts.
The process of restoring the Qianlong Garden is also a process for researchers to re-
understand the Qianlong Garden. A large amount of previous historical information
retained in the Qianlong Garden gradually emerged in the investigation and
conservation, and many mysteries about the craft were interpreted during the
process. The Qianlong Garden, which had been asleep for more than 200 years, was
awakened and entered the public eye again, showing its new vitality and brilliance.
