Wuxi Retail Master Plan

The Toy Factory and Retail renovattion and preservation project envisions a seamless

blend of Wuxi’s historic charm with modern architectural innovation. Visitors are guided

through an immersive journey, transitioning from the Wuxi Grand Canal’s traditional

water town atmosphere to a contemporary experience that mirrors the winding

alleys and intimate courtyards of sloped-roof houses. The design centers around

symbolic floating volumes that echo the ripples of water, preserving the site’s natural

flow while moving towards Wuxi’s modern identity. An arrival zone with reflective

water installations and artful lighting evokes the tranquility and reflective beauty

of the Grand Canal, welcoming visitors with a sense of peace and contemplation.

Key spaces within the project, such as the vibrant central plaza and intimate

courtyards, capture the essence of Wuxi’s community and architectural style. The

activity plaza recreates the energy of a marketplace, fostering social interaction and

cultural exchange, while smaller courtyards provide moments of quiet discovery. The

Toy factory Brickwork Auditorium repurposes historical materials into interactive

displays, symbolizing Wuxi’s tradition of craftsmanship and transformation. By

juxtaposing aged brickwork with sleek, modern elements, the project creates a

dynamic harmony between past and present, honoring Wuxi’s rich heritage while

embracing the future of Wuxi.
